Sexual Pragmatism

Poem

We did not know it, but I had given an ultimatum

If the café was empty

If the strangers looked unkind

If the weather wasn’t right

If the walk was too far

If I couldn’t find my way back

I had made this pact in my mind to stay

Yet with the other hand I left through every door

But I couldn’t say the words.

I wanted him.

He wanted to make love to me through a hole in the wall.

As far as I was concerned, this was supremely economical.

This is incredibly relatable. It always seems like we are torn between knowing we deserve better, but as they say, the heart wants what the heart wants. And instead of settling for the best, we just settle for the best we can get.

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. If you're not sure what that means, check out our feedback guide, or look through the comment sections of any other post here, or click the links to the author's feedback above. If you're not sure whether your comments are feedback, or you have any other questions, please send us a modmail.

I am not sure how literal this poem is, maybe some of it went over my head, but I enjoyed it just as well. I read it a few times and I ended up with the impression is was weird and kinky and oddly relatable - all in a good way.

I'm not sure if I was supposed to, but I laughed out loud at the last line.

The only thing that threw me is that I'm not sure I'm misunderstanding the first line or if the word ultimatum is used incorrectly. An ultimatum usually indicates one or the other. Here it is a list of circumstances that align. At least how I read it.

This made me think of the transactional nature of sexual relationships and how the fleeting feeling of it somehow makes it more desirable.

I enjoyed reading it, but, though keep in mind this might be a me issue, I struggled to understand how literal you were taking some of the lines.

The imagery is quite strong, but I'm not sure I understand the deeper meaning. Do you mean if those things were the case you wouldn't stay? They seem to be more reasons to leave than reasons to stay. Maybe I'm taking it too literally. The glory hole fantasy being described as economical is excellent. Well done!
