I time travel with music

Poem

I listen to music constantly

Music records my feelings better than my memory ever reliably could

When I play music from past times in my life,

I sip from the cup of my emotions past

The flavor of the nostalgia is deep and rich

Bursting joy

Crumpling grief

Burning longing

Swelling hope

The sensation of past feelings washing over my body is a physical one

As my state of mind time travels to the past

I take pleasure in this

I don’t yearn to be my past self,

But I enjoy visiting her.

Isn't it wonderful to be moved so poignantly through music? I love the line "Music records my feelings". It's brief but at first glance made me think about the way it's phrased as if music were a way to compartmentalize your emotions. Then you open it up bit by bit when you "sip from the cup" when you listen to a certain song. Lines 6-9 also work great. Thanks for sharing!

Hello readers, welcome to OCpoetry. This subreddit is a writing workshop community -- a place where poets of all skill levels can share, enjoy, and talk about each other's poetry. Every person who's shared, including the OP above, has given some feedback (those are the links in the post) and hopes to receive some in return (from you, the readers).

If you really enjoyed this poem and just want to drop a quick comment, to show some appreciation or give kudos, things like "great job!" or "made me cry", or "loved it" or "so relateable", please do. Everyone loves a compliment. Thanks for taking the time to read and enjoy.

If you want to share your own poem, you'll need to give this writer some detailed feedback. Good feedback explains from your point of view what it was like to read the poem, and then tries to explain how the poem made you feel like that. Music has always that effect on me. A summer hit playing on the radio instantly brings me back to the summer of that year. Nice work!

Before starting with technicalities and stuff, i should say, this was very beautiful. This is one of the most difficult and also most meaningful places to which literature goes, that is; to try and bring another thing (mostly another form of art) to words. It can be painting, movies if we’re being modern and in your case, music. These let us express what we cannot with anything else, they let us finally understand and share an experience that would be forever trapped inside, if not for art. Now, even trying to bring such a thing into poetry is freaking mind blowing, let alone succeeding in it. Truth is, i after all am an amateur and all i can give you will only be my opinion. But look at it this way; if your poem makes anyone, even only one person, think of a piece of music they once loved or maybe start humming a simple melody afterwards, you’ve done an incredible job.

This is lovely, I also often feel like that when listening to music and love the feeling listening to say music from child hood brings

I'm impressed by how well you conveyed the feelings music can evoke. It really is the closest thing we have to time travel with such a clear conduit for emotion. A connection to our old lives, infinitely personal for each person when they view it.

The last line is perfection. I use music in this way all the time, visiting your past while still being at peace with what is. Very enjoyable read.

I love your references to nostalgia and exploring the separate self. As humans, our concept of "I" is always tuned with the present, thus we are always surprised when we see what we did a week, a month, or even a day ago.

Music takes me away as well, this poem really fits with me also, I like the word play and song type flow of the poem.

Beautiful! I like how you spoke about each emotion and how you said in the end that though you don't yearn for your past self, you like visiting her.

This is such a beautiful picture of how memories and our favorite music are entwined together. As I’m reading it I have flashes of music and memories that are sewn together. I like the imagery of sipping from a cup being related to enjoying certain memories. That’s a wonderful part of music is that it gives us power to be able to select a certain feeling and memory from the past and we can feel it all over again in a near tangible way. Very well done.

I think I like this poem a lot because it's relatable In a nostalgic kind of way if that makes any sense, i really enjoyed this poem!!:)

Sometimes it’s not even a sad song but just an old one I’ve not heard in years & some particular line opens the kernel of some old memory, all perfectly preserved and I start to cry hysterically in my car. Thanks for explaining this much better than I could, OP
