How common is it use a dedicated IDE instead of toolchain + text editor?

Tech question

Hello,

in my endevours in emebedded SW, I'm trying to stay away from dedicated IDE's like CubeMX and Code Composer Studio to instead learn how to manually bring up a tool chain and writing the code from 0 and compiling with a makefile in an attempt to properly learn the matter.

How common is this in the industry? Do you rely on dedicated IDE's or you like/prefer to setup everything yourself?
