Prompt/Game: Magical Qualities & Sensations

General Discussion

Time to play a game! In this one, to help build out your magic system a bit more or help others discover more about it, we're using qualities and sensations to relate back to aspects of your magical system. It can relate to anything - users of your magic, those who police magic, its limits, the magic itself, how you've built the system so on and so forth. With that said, here are some qualities and sensations:

  • Soft (for ex, and you can use this to help with all the other items below: you might have a soft magic system, or magic may have a soft ring to it when used. Or blue magic actually feels soft in your system or world, or maybe utilizing magic in your system turns people into softies... go wild with your imagination and creativity!)
  • Sticky
  • Vibrant
  • Sweet
  • Heavy

I'll add bonuses the more responses we get, as well as some bonus questions for those who answer. Have fun!

Magic a naturally made energy that is around everything from a river flowing to a baby crying. Those who use magic can be overwhelmed by some of its effects depending on what’s being done. Say someone accepts a boon from a spirit of love and devotion as they cast a spell their submerged in crazed euphoria. This can even extend to other feelings depending on the ritual or spell being done. Invoking baccus can leave a caster drunk as they dance with the taste of sweet fruits in their mouth.

Witches with enough power can perform a special skill (still working on naming it). It lets a witch create a field of that effects all those within it for example creating fog that causes sorrow or a dark light the induces madness on all those it shines on. This power is basically expressing the base definition of your personality on the world meaning it is unique for every witch that can do it.

Love it! Lots of qualities and senses going on here. How about round? Is there anything that has this quality, uses a sense that's circular, or is there anyway that this word plays into your magic system (or world, if applicable)?

Thanks and the circle actually is very significant in my story. A common spell is using a liquid like tears or blood to draw a circle that elicit harmony or protection. The ouroboros serpent is an immutable symbol used in changing things and is hinted to be living on a level beyond the gods.

Circles are also used in rituals done with multiple people so as a way to connect and pool their power together.

I'll throw up some of my own answers to help get the noodles going!

  • Soft - my system happens to be soft and nebulous, but there are some rules for consistency sake. Various materials crafted from natural resources give users powers depending on their wound and the material used to heal it.
  • Sticky - One of the magical trees that are utilized for healing has a sap that is sticky, and it's magical medicine is called "Golden Sunlight". It is light that drips like honey and is spun into fine threads.
  • Vibrant - Magic users, when healed with Gold Sunlight, have their shadows converted into auras. They glow with colors instead of having physical shadows, which makes some of them appear vibrant - depending on how much power they hold. A weaker or less unique aura typically denotes a Gold Kannumon (magic user) who is weaker or less developed, or has a wound that's not as deep.
  • Sweet - One of the trees, when hit with a breeze, or when she's pleased, will sing. This gives the impression that the tree is sweet. Her material is known as the Crystal Glass, which is shaved like ice to create needles, or other materials, that are used for healing.
  • Heavy - Those who are healed in my system are said to be weighed down by burdens, burdens so great that only divine forces could repair their very souls and spirits or restore their reputations. The story that my world is set in deals with how our traumas, scars and generational curses affect us.

Magic in my world comes from Gods. I use ancient Egypt’s pantheon as a reference. The most important are: -Ra the god of sun fire magic -Apophis (chaos, enemy of light) and Seth (desert, evil and darkness) Whenever they influence world everything touched by that influence begins to mutate and combine with anything around it. That works on animals, plants, insect and even humans. That creates powerful beasts, mutations and hybrids. Then when being infused with that magic dies it releases said magic and repeats the cycle. Enough Fire can negate that process. And then there are few gods that I don’t know how to implement in my world -Chnum god of water and creator of life -Bastet goddess of fun -Amon god of wind

There’s obviously a lot more gods but I want to keep it simple and use only a few I find interesting If you have any ideas tell me!

Ooh, I’d for sure like to hear more about your system. Did you post it here?

Also, since we’re on a roll, how about the quality lethargic? Anything come to mind in relation to magic, gods, magic users, your story, that could incorporate that word or utilizes any form of tiredness, sleep, etc?

These-Ad5873•

No I did not as it’s all work in progress.

Well there are endless possibilities because of chaotic nature of beasts and alike. So there surely would be plans that would make you sleepy and powerful creatures that are lazy. Because gods are separated into two categories (light and darkness) Then I suppose it would make sense if minions of the dark ones would feel weaker at day And fice versa. Maybe fire mages would have a problem sleeping near fire place?

There is a limit to how much you can kill and eat magic beasts because your body is changing it also affects your mind. It’s comparable to cyber-psychotic from cyberpunk. When it happens person loses control, sanity and humanity thus becoming a beats themselves.

Also thanks for reading all my gibberish <3

Sticky - my system is a mix of Bleach (the manga) and pokemon. So there are nature/elemental spirits that can sometimes pick a person they come across to bind themselves to, though both have to be willing. This is a joining of body and soul that strengthens with time and effort, so it is sticky in that they are essentially soul mates.

Soft - In that while the system is hard and has different levels, the way you go about it is soft. It's primarily all about the spirit learning about the world and their soul mate which unlocks it's ability to understand and express itself, leading to powerups.

Sweet - as I describe it as honey for the brain. It's not quite addictive but it feels right, as though the world were a crooked painting and now someone has straightened it.

Vibrant - is how the spirit first appears. It is wild in all senses of the word as it has no point of reference for anything, though there is always a sense of awe around them. Some take the shape of animals or natural features in their domain, and some just roam about reacting to anything they see with utterly alien feelings (like one fire spirit is known to periodically explode, like when he sees anything new, anything he doesn't like or understand, or even when he is bored).

Heavy - is their bond. It's like being given a child out of nowhere, with all the strength and ability of a full grown adult that is heavily confused, that you unconditionally love but don't know how to help sometimes.
Understandably, not that many people progress through the stages when becoming stronger requires understanding and helping your spirit more. Every bond is unique and is like a new language and culture that nobody else knows so you have to just figure it out.

Very nice! I like the soulmate aspect. Given that, how about the sensation burn? Does that at all happen using your magic, or is it apart of your system in anyway? Does that sensation play any part in your story, the characters, etc?

Also - I know you spoke about the fire spirits, so let’s see if there anything else that comes to mind for you!

CreativeThienohazardI might have some ideas.•

you are describing honey which can be hardened

JurydevaOP•

Yeah, it’s meant to mimic the properties of honey (a tool used in healing, good catch on noticing the theme!), but it isn’t.
