Landlord Expects Replacement 40 Year Old Carpet
Hi Legal Advice,
I caused a small burn in our carpet for a 40 Year Old unit. It's about a 1 foot by 2 foot area. The burn is in the corner of the dining room. Landlord is trying to make me pay to replace the entire first floor carpet (probably 400 square feet) with high end wood flooring.
I feel like this is excessive, as I can replace the carpet myself at a cost of $200 from somewhere else in the unit. Additionally it feels like she is taking advantage of me/the situation in order to better her unit. Am I shit out of luck here/is there anything I can do to not have to replace the whole thing?
I have renters insurance but don't want to go through it if I can help it; this will hurt me from getting a new apartment when I move out in August and I'd rather not have it on the record/skyrocket premiums. This is in NYS.
Thank you in advance.
