Drill press, sand paper, and no real idea what I was doing. I was happy.

This was my first attempt at any kind of "wood turning". I have a drill press and this seemed like a good afternoon project. I used this for general information, and while there is obviously room for improvement, I am thrilled with these early results.
how does it feel for writing. My dad has a lathe and I was the pen kit a little back and was thinking of having him make me one
It actually feels pretty nice. I've always preferred a fatter pen, but you can easily take it down to a smaller diameter if you like. What kit were you looking at using?
I was at the wood shop store with my dad, there were so many that I dont remember which ones I liked. One of the guys that worked there was making all the kits for a display model. I was afraid that the pen would heavy and awkward to use.
Its about the same weight as a normal nice pen. At its thickest point, this one is 0.5 inches in diameter with about a 0.3 inch hole drilled in the middle. As you can see this leaves very little wood to weigh you down. Next time you're at the store check out the pen blanks they have. You can feel how light these are, then consider you'll be removing probably more than 80% of it in the process. I do suggest giving it a go because it is very fun. I'm finishing up my second pen now.
This is my second one I just finished. It is much smaller and feels like a normal pen.

I saw this then questioned my post. Should I post more info? I linked the video that I followed, but would be happy to provide answers to questions if anyone had any.
You made an overweight pen! Tell it to lay off the carbs!
