Masculine/feminine text?

I am intrigued by the responses I often receive to anonymous things I've written (often posts on Craigslist). Most people automatically assume that a man is the author of the posting when, in reality, it's me - a twenty-something female.

Why would people automatically assume that a writer is a female or male simply by some gender-free text?
