Yet Another Blizzard Fail
I've been wanted the D2 style items with class specific skill bonuses (like +2 to corpse explosion) in this game so I decided to do a test...
The hypothesis: Buying gear with % bonuses to skills may improve your damage output
The test subject: I've got a pretty maxed out monk character. I tested an item with a monk specific skill to see how it might improve my character.
The test: My normal helm with has a +77 dexterity modifier. I bought a helm off the AH with +12% (just about the max value) to deadly reach (which is my only attack).
My normal attack does on average 19,852 dps. When I switch to the +12% deadly reach helm my dps is drops to 16,571.
I lose over 3000 dps by using a helm which is supposed to offer my class a specific bonus.
Conclusion: When faced with choosing items that have class specific bonuses versus + primary stat, go with + primary stat. Yet another Blizzard fail.
Final note ... It would also seems that class specific n% bonuses to skills are equivalent to n primary stat as 1 point to primary stat increases damage by 1 percent. As such all you need to do is boost your primary stat and forget about items with specific increases to skills, as primary stat increases effect all attack skills as well as offering other bonuses (dogdge change, armour, ect).
