What are the physical limits of our ability to see into space?

Astronomy

Are there any physical limits that restrict the amount of detail we are able to see from very distant objects, or is that ability limited by our technology?

By this, I mean will it ever be possible to view planets orbiting other stars with the same clarity and detail that we can view the moon, barring the necessary technological advancements, or are there limits to the amount of detail enforced strictly by the amount and nature of the light that we would be collecting from those objects?
