Just had laparoscopic surgery yesterday - here's what happened and what I'm feeling today
In case someone else out there is thinking about having this done, or has had it done in the past and could offer some advice, here's what happened to me:
My OB found a large mass on my left ovary about a month ago - I hadn't been having a great deal of pain with periods, but enough that the combination of these two things (mass + pain) along with my desire to have a child in the near future sent me off to the surgeons. Thankfully, they were great, and I was able to get an appt and a surgery date almost immediately.
The day before, I had to stop eating at noon and drinking at midnight, but I did have to drink magnesium citrate to make sure my bowels were empty. That was...unpleasant, but necessary. Then, the day of, they got me in almost immediately that morning and put me under. (TMI warning: don't shave your pubic hair because that leaves the area a little raw, with small cuts in your skin that are opportunities for bacterial infection. Just trim.)
I don't remember the rest of yesterday very clearly, but I do know that I threw up quite a bit after coming out of the surgery (and, yes, I did warn them that I would probably do this, so clearly the drugs that they gave me were not effective). According to the doctors and the pictures they showed me, my entire lower abdomen was a complete mess - there were spots and adhesions everywhere and several endometriomas. I guess I'm one of the very, very lucky few women who have Stage IV but not a great deal of pain. They cauterized and cut what they could, but are relying on the Lupron to "starve" the rest of estrogen for the next six months, and then my husband and I are going to try to get pregnant the six months after that.
So, today: I have to say that I'm a great deal more sore today than I was yesterday. I've stopped throwing up and having the runs, which is nice, but my tongue has gone numb (supposedly, this is a common side effect of anesthetic and will go away in a few weeks). I'm really sleepy, which is probably the pain meds, and really mentally fuzzy (also the pain meds, I suspect!). All in all, I'm glad that it's over with and I can feel a sense of getting a handle on this disease. I guess for me, it's just about control - and, I finally feel like I have a sense of control over this.
For those of you who have had this done:
- How long did the soreness last?
- Was the Lupron helpful?
- What were the side effects of the Lupron?
Hope everyone is doing well. Thanks for listening.
