Wanting to start and Import/Export business. HELP

A friend and I want to start exporting products to latin america and importing goods back to the US (legal goods ;) ). Does anyone have any tips on the legal paperwork and licenses that are needed. We have some understanding on the banking operations part but are uninformed when it comes to the actual trade process. Thanks in advance!
