Ideas for Rebuilding the Bobcats?
I just wanted to hear some of your ideas on rebuilding the Bobcats. Here's mine ---
-Charlotte trades Tyrus Thomas, Reggie Williams, and the #2 Pick in the 2012 Draft to Houston for Kevin Martin, the #14, and the #16 pick. Thomas still has 3 years, 26 mill on his deal, while Martin's will expire after next year (12.9 mill). Charlotte will therefore have martin's 12.9 mill coming off the payroll after 2013 as well as Corey Magette's 10.9 mill, DeSanga Diop's 7.3 million, and Matt Carroll's 3.5 million. That means that after 2013, Charlotte will only have 10.93 million dollars TOTAL committed to their players (Kemba Walker, Bismack Biyombo, Gerald Henderson, BJ Mullens).
- So this means (this being what I wrote above) that Charlotte will have a young PG in Walker, PF/C in Biyombo, C in BJ Mullens and a 2/3 in Gerald Henderson who had an alright year last year (at least in terms of his teammates).
- This leaves a hole at the 2/3 and perhaps frontcourt, depending how you feel about Mullens and Biyombo. -Charlotte can hope that Austin Rivers/Dion Waiters falls to them at 14, but realistically drafts Perry Jones III and Terrence Ross at 14 and 16. The combined salaries of these two will be around 3.58 million for 2013, so the 2013 Bobcats will have 14.5 million committed towards Walker, Biyombo, Henderson, Mullens, Jones III, and Ross. -So at this point, Charlotte has a tentative starting PG in Walker, SG in Henderson, and some rotation of Ross, Jones III, Biyombo and Mullens in the front court. They also have roughly 43.5 million dollars in free cap space (assuming the salary cap is comparable to the last few seasons at 58 million) -There really is no point in predicting what Free Agents the bobcats could land because we have no idea which of the big names will 1) want to come to charlotte and 2) will not sign some kind of extension by then. But for those of you who are curious, the list of 2013 NBA free agents isn't half bad.... http://www.hoopsworld.com/2013-nba-free-agents With 43.5 million, charlotte could add two full max contracts to their roster and still have room to extend their young players
For those of you who are wondering, all of my facts were from either wikipedia (the salary cap) or hoopshype.com (the salaries for current NBA players as well as the projected salaries for incoming rookies). Also, here is the Martin for Thomas&Williams deal -- http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7fqc8wq
Finally, this deal wouldn't be too bad for Houston as well -- it has been very, very well documented how much the Rockets have coveted a big man (like Pau Gasol), so the Rockets could use the #2 pick to pair Andre Drummond/Thomas Robinson etc with Lowry/Dragic (depending on who they keep), or try to flip the #2 pick in a deal for Gasol.
