How safe is the Keystone Pipeline?

Looking for some perspective on the environmental impacts of transporting and refining bitumen as opposed to conventional oil. I know it's very energy-intensive, but what are the risks in transporting the oil sands? Is the final product really just as good, will it live up to emissions standards in the US?
