All are welcome.
Hello r/Teenagers! I have been suscribed to this subreddit for quite some time now, and it is often both entertaining and helpful. I have however noticed some heavy heteronormativity in this subreddit, and I decided to make a topic about it, instead of writing angry comments on people's posts every now and then.
So the description of this subreddit is "A sub-Reddit for teenager Redditors. All are welcome." Now, I might be wrong, but if someone is welcoming you, you expect them to try to make you feel at home, or at least welcomed. I have, as a homosexual male teenager, not felt myself too welcomed here. First there is the FAQ. Here, for example, is a quote from it:
"There's this girl I like, should I ask her out? (...)
How should I ask her out?
Man the f--- up and approach her. Ask her if she'd like to go out with you. If you're deliberating over whether or not to ask, do it. If you don't, some other guy will take her."
So this is probably one of the first things you read when you visit the subreddit. Is it really THAT hard to formulate a FAQ where you don't assume everyone is a heterosexual male? Plus, the phrase "man the fuck up" sounds really strange to me (it implies that masculinity is something of high value/something to be encouraged in this subreddit). I have already commented on this, but the FAQ hasn't changed since.
Then there is all of these posts. I have yet to find a single post where either the OP or the commentators are not assumed to be heterosexuals. If you do feel that gay is okay, can't you put just a little efford into making homo/bi/pan-sexuality feel a bit less unusual/abnormal? To assume that everyone is heterosexual and not acknowledge other sexualities is equated with disencouraging non-heterosexuals by making them feel unrecognized.
Of course, every non-heterosexual does not feel this way, but these are my two cents and thoughts about this subreddit and I wanted to share them. Even if you disagree with me, or even if you think that heteronormativity is something that should be encouraged, please keep in mind that there are people who are not male, female, or heterosexual. If you do indeed think that they have the same right to express themselves and to live their lifes to their fullest, you should not make them into aliens, not in real life nor on the internet.
EDIT: After much negative responce (and some crappy jokes (really, you refer to my username? Clever, never heard that before)), I do admit that it may be reasonable with a hetero-centrated FAQ since most people on here seem to be heterosexuals. I personally would like it to adress more than just heterosexual guys though, but again, I do get your point. However, I do still think that you should not assume that anyone is heterosexual just because of their gender, since it makes non-heterosexuality not normal (saying gay is ok doesn't really change much when you are expected to be heterosexual at all times). I would also appriciate if people actually took their time to read the entire post instead of downvoting/complaining because they think I said something I didn't (after reading the comments, I am wondering if I was not clear enough when writing this. If you have trouble understanding my posts, please let me know as English is my third language. If you do understand what I am trying to write, please give me feedback on what I actually have written, instead of giving me shit for stuff I haven't even said.
EDIT 2: It has also occured to me that no one has mentioned anything about the "man the fuck up" part. To me this was one of the most startling things.
