I have a genuine question for this subreddit and I'll try to make this as nonjudgmental as possible

NSFW

Ok so I heard about this subreddit and I didn't think it could be real. Obviously I was at first bothered by the images but I can't blame anyone but myself for that since I couldn't expect anything different but here is my question:

When the post is framed as a joke of sorts like "check out my skateboard" and it's a picture of a person standing on a baby, is it framed that way as a coping strategy? A way to detach from the tragedy long enough to deal with and comprehend the situation? Sort of like how the TV show MAS*H was about awful violence and war and sadness but most of the time the doctors were joking as a way to separate from the reality?

Please don't think i'm trying to condemn you guys. I just want to better understand. Like many others my immediate assumption was that anyone looking at this had some kind of sick pleasure involved but I've now realized that some people look to understand, some look because you can't not look, some look because you can't hide from the tragedy and pretend it doesn't exist and some look to just learn about the causes of death for school or work or w/e. So now my only unanswered question is, why is it presented like it's funny. Do some people actually think it is?

TLDR: What is the reason behind the jokes attached to these pictures?
