How is it determined whether a player is favored or not?

Title says it. I've been wondering this for a bit.

When I sometimes look at my opponents after a match that have been favoured, they are often lower on the ladder than me, and doesn't have nearly as many points as I do. Like, their win/lose rate must be lower than mine.
