Why is the Auction House time left tab inaccurate?

I was trying to bid on a justice lantern, obviously others were as well, so I set up a stop watch the instant it hit <1m.

I constantly refreshed until it changed to <1m and started the timer.

The item disappeared as sold when I tried to bid at 45 seconds, what the fuck kind of shitty programming is this?
