Love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who harm you....upvote those who troll you?

I've been thinking about pointless reddit debates lately, and my own attitude toward them. And they can make me angry. Sometimes, stupidly angry.

And I know that I can sometimes use the downvote as an expression of disagreement (regardless of what Reddiquette says), or as a satisfying way to continue stewing in petulant feelings of superiority. Especially when I'm in a debate with someone.

So I've been thinking about upvoting those who engage me with malicious intent, or with those whom I'm tempted to just dismiss, and lead to my own stewing.

And I think I should upvote them. At least if they happen to be directed at me personally.

Now there are some objections:

  • Downvotes serve a legitimate purpose, to help those conversations which contribute rise to the top.

BUT Upvoting infuriating comments directed at me doesn't change how others who aren't so caught up and inflamed will vote; either they A) Will see them and downvote, or B) won't see them, in which case my downvoting has served no purpose.

And I think that at least for those conversations I'm involved in, it's probably more important to refocus myself on responding in patience and love, a refocusing demanded by my upvoting, than on making the minor expression of disapproval shown by a downvote.

Thoughts?
