Has anyone knitted with pencil roving?

I'm considering doing a ridiculously cushy cowl (or several!) with roving and was wondering if other have tried to knit with it. Does the fact that it's effectively a massive single-ply mean that it will pill like mad? Is it so weak that it could pull apart? Essentially, is this going to be more trouble than it's worth?
