[Spoilers for the Finale] Still not sure what Amon was doing

To the best of my understanding:

• Amon was a bloodbender
• When he was "taking away bending" he actually used bloodbending to magic away their bending
• Therefore, the only way to fix people would be to bloodbend them back to normal? Or be the Avatar and energybend?

Is that all correct? Or is there something missing or incorrect or did I misinterpret something. The ending was really good and the only part that bothered be was the whole Amon de-bending people part.
