Trying to get my friend a gift to tell him to follow his dreams. Need advice

My friend of 8+ years has always had a passion for music and as of the last few years specifically electronic (loves Drum and Bass, some house, and some hard-style) music. He loves messing around in FL studio and i would love to be able to give him some hardware to help him get it going a little bit. I was thinking an XY pad or a cheapish synth but i am not sure what direction I should go in. Maybe better production software?

I am looking for something not too expensive but says I think he should continue doing what hes doing and I support it.
