Any advice on whether or not to use a bass drum lift/which ones are good and affordable?

So I have a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit which has an 18" bass drum. It came with a lift for the bass but I lost it at a gig. I was wondering whether or not this is really necessary for a small kick. The clamp on the pedal is metal so I'm a bit worried about it damaging the hoop (though I've heard of these lifts damaging the hoop as well).

Anyway, just looking for some advice. They seem pretty overpriced for what they are, which pushes me away from getting one.
