Rack front panel connections

I have a M-Audio Delta 1010 soundcard; I need to get (some of) my ins/outs on the front panel somehow.

I'd like to ask how pros usually deal with this. My best guess so far involves some D-type connectors (example), a front plate that can accommodate them and a soldering iron.

Anyone care to share some pro-tips? Also, if you know a book or two I can read concerning these "details" of studio setup, please let me know.
