I'm starting an MAT program soon. Are endorsements with a masters worth it?
Hey r/teachers!
I'm rapidly approaching starting my MAT program, aiming for high school social studies, and the school offers a selection of special endorsements in addition to the primary degree. The ESOL endorsement strikes me as potentially valuable training to have at the high school level while working with mainstream students (who will have varied levels of English proficiency).
While the school staff I have spoken to agree with this assessment, and have stressed its importance in securing me a job, I am wary of the $4,000 price tag. While I haven't gotten the used car salesman vibe from the school I am having a hard time taking their advice without a grain of salt.
One element I have seen muddling the waters is that many states and districts apparently require some form of ESOL or ELL training, which would support the endorsement, except that many of them seem to offer the training once they have hired a candidate anyways. If I can get the same training later without the extra loans this seems kind of silly.
Have any of you taken the endorsement with a masters? Is the endorsement training worth it, regardless of the job impact, in a general classroom? Will it have a substantial impact on my ability to find a job?
