Call me Ishmael. Why?

I wrote an email to a friend, which included the tale of a whale. I called him Ishmael 'for reasons', I wrote, 'that please me'.

She wrote back with the suggestion that I had meant Ishmael = fishmeal, and that started me thinking.

Do we know why the name Ishmael?
