What is this thing on my alternator?

My alternator died and I've decided to replace it myself. I started to undo those bolts and it started releasing pressurized air. I'm assuming this is some sort of cooling thing, but at the same time I don't see the black or red power cables.

Anyone know what these things are? Is there a problem with slowly unscrewing them and releasing the air? Thank you.

[EDIT] So that's not the alternator. That's the A/C compressor. Thanks shabaz. Anyone have any idea how to diagnose whether I have a batter issue or an alternator issue? My car died the other day and we got it working with one of those charged battery jumpers, but when I turned on the headlights it died again.

[EDIT] Thanks everyone for your help :)

[EDIT] Issue solved. Dead battery got replaced. Alternator getting returned. Thank you all.
