(spoiler!) Let's talk ambitions

A lot has come from this finale, but I want to discuss: Why exactly do YOU think Noatok became "Amon" and an "Equalist"? In Tarrlok's flashback, Noatok had thrown away Yakone's ambitions right before running away, so I don't think he was twisted by his father's ambitions like the show seemed to suggest. Some things he had said such as "You aren't the strongest, the Avatar is. He can take away bending. What's more powerful than that?" I think lead him to search for a way to use blood bending to become stronger than the Avatar. So... actually being a bender himself... why do you think Amon really wanted take away all bending and defeat the Avatar?
