I got a cat and I need tips.

My cousin had to give away her cat :( I took her in. Luna is very friendly but right now she's hiding out. Will luna eventually get use to us and come out from hiding? Should I try petting her/letting her sit on my lap? Or should i just wait for her to come to me.

I don't want to bother her and have the cat ending up hating me so I'm trying to give it space. I don't know Luna's age but its definitely over a year old.
