How much force is required to remove a human ear?

Some people on those internet forums you're always hearing about in the news (cough reddit cough) were claiming that only 7 pounds of force could rip off an ear. I realize there is not much besides cartilage holding the ear to the head, but this number seemed ludicrously low, and I would expect to have met many more earless people if it were true.
