Have a mini wooden chest, want to paint it, but don't know any cool painting techniques for amateurs! Suggestions?

And I was thinking about painting with a theme, but would rather go with an abstract. And yes, I've already though of painting it like a chest from The Legend Of Zelda :D However, like I said before I'd prefer something abstract.
