Engineering at an oil refinery?

Hi reddit,

I'm starting a co-op at an oil refinery this coming Fall. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with this (I'm in materials science, btw). Just explain me things like, what's the environment like (will it be really dirty and smelly like they're usually portrayed?)? What kind of work should I be expecting (field/cubicle work)? Any advice in general would be helpful!
