How do I choose a computer that will last me for a few years? How much should I pay for it?

I'm not sure how well I can take care of it in college. I want to run programs play dvds, bluetooth, write computer programs not so much hardcore games. I will probably run Visual Studio because I'm familiar with it and either microsoft office or open office.
