New Laptop for College

Hi, I'm going to be entering college (engineering) next fall and it's time I got a new laptop for school, but I also want to be able to play games like Diablo 3. Nothing too advanced graphics wise, I'm content with playing things on low or medium settings. My current laptop cannot even run D3 and can barely run Starcraft 2 on lowest settings and League of Legends on high settings.

My friend won that laptop in a raffle but he doesn't need it, and told me he is willing to sell it to me for $800. For the specs is the money worth it? I'm looking for a laptop that can play games, but is also convenient to have at college so portability is a big factor. If not this laptop, please suggest something within the price range of $700-$1200. I am not open to a desktop/laptop combo (whatever that is). Thanks for your time!
