Working 6 to 10 hours per WEEK doth not make a PART TIME job!

We're all familiar that a Full-time job is 40 hours a week and that part time is at most 20 hours.

But what if you signed up for a part time job that required you to work 7 days a week only to find out that of the 168 hours that exist in a single week, you were only allowed to work 6 to 10 hours of that week?

I've recently found my self in yet another undesirable situation.

Under pressure by both my voc rehab councilor and my job developer, I was pushed into taking what I though was a part-time seasonal job.

The job is with a very respectable greenhouse company that works with a well know big-box hardware store. The green house delivers a cart full of new flowers, I try to get them to fit in with the current inventory, arrange the inventory to look good, toss out the bad inventory, and water everything. Some plants require watering nearly every few hours.

I found this job on Craigslist, so all criticism of Craigslist aside, the fact that I filled out a ton of paperwork, a W-4, an I-9, a voided check, and passed a background check, I had assumed that I would be working my ass off as a merchandiser doing the thing I do at home for nothing given my interests in gardening and plants.

The job seems to have plenty of responsiblities, and I was excited about my first day of work (which was today. (yay!)) This is a lot of important work. No slacking off. No shortcuts. Some good hard honest work, even if it was $9/hour.

Or...at least I thought it would be. No sooner than I got there at 9:30, my shift ended at 11:30. I only worked for two hours. Meaning I only made $18. At very least, I was hoping to work 4 hours.

I thought "Maybe this is how things happen on the first day." I told my boss I'd show up tomorrow to take care of things and to definitely make sure that the plants get watered as the temperature is going to reach a scorching 100 degrees. She also asked me to send her an email to remind her of something she was going to tell me later.

I did that. In the letter I told her I would be there tomorrow afternoon. I also asked if she'd like me to be there an extra hour tomorrow.

She replied that it would not need to show up tomorrow. And that merchandisers were only allowed to work 6 to 10 hours per week per store.

That's when it hit me. This job was part-time of part-time work. Add to this, the fact that so much work had to be crammed into that small time slot also seemed suspicious.

This really wasn't what I was hoping to be my new job after five years in limbo. And I made more at my college job which was part-time years ago.

What's my next course of action?
