Question regarding damascus steel.

Hello, I'm currently abroad in Argentina, but my stay is quickly coming to a close. Argentina is fairly famous for their "Gaucho knifes," large versatile knives used for centuries by the Argentine equivalent of the American cowboy. They also make kitchen knives of the same style. As I enjoy cooking and am in the market for a souvenir, I was thinking about buying one of these knives.

The higher end knives have damascus steel blades between 5 and 8 inches and horn handles. How much would you say these kinds of knives should cost? Can anyone speak to the quality difference of damascus steel? Is this the kind of knife I'll be able to use for years to come?

Thank you!
