Android for a desktop?

I am looking for some suggestions. I have a desktop with a touchscreen monitor currently running windows. I would like to make better use of the touch screen capabilities as the native windows stuff kind of stinks. I was hoping there would be a way to run android on my machine, but this has proved to be a bit more difficult than expected. I have tried virtualbox running DROID and youwave, but was a bit disappointed that I cannot access the play store. Any suggestions? Apologies if something like this has already been answered... posting from my phone so searching is difficult. Thanks in advance
