AMA request. A Mastor Mason, the third degree. Of the esoteric fraternal organization known as The Freemasons

I am just really curious to know about the Freemasons. The wikipedia was more about history and I am interested in learning more about a personal perspective or insider viewpoint. For example I know a gentleman who wears a ring, and has a tattoo is this something that allows him certain prvileges? Or grants him entrance? Or he just likes to show his involvement. I should note that he is a really great upstanding citizen and role model. And what does does the initiation process entail? If you can share those details. Also how do Freemasons differ from other lodges such as Elks or Moose or Eagles.
