How do you know when orbitals need to be hybridized?

I'm in an accelerated Gen Chem 1 class and while my teacher explained what hybridization is and how to do it, she provided no information about when to do it. Reading online I've gotten the impression that it is based on molecular geometry? Any info is greatly appreciated!
