Call me crazy, but who is Amon? More importantly, what does he want? (Finale Spoiler!)
Both of them hated their father, that's one thing to be sure. Tarrlok tried to take control of Republic City because he wanted to show that he's better than his father, though ironically fulfilling his wishes, but even then he admitted he was shaped by the ghost of his father's past.
Amon on the other hand, is he really trying to do the same? As I said, he hated his father, probably even more than Tarrlok. Did his father actions convinced him that bending is really the source of evil in the world? Was he just using the non benders as a pawn, or did he really sort of care about them? Was he still trying to avenge his father? Or did he just fell to the dark side, went drunk with power? Was it just a massive plot to make him the only bender in the world? Or maybe he just wanted to watch the world burn?
The most plausible explanation is that he truly believes in what he said, he believed that bending is the source of all evil, since, that's what Tarrlok theorized. But he could be wrong. His conversation with Tarrlok at the end seems to imply that Amon also attempted what Tarrlok attempted.
It's no use if we get to know the face behind the mask but not why he wore the mask in the first place. Why, Noatok?
