Mass Effect Bring Down the Sky Question

Hey r/masseffect. I am wondering if it's possible to play through the mass effect dlc after killing saren/saving the council and beating the game. I've just completed the game without playing the dlc (I thought that you could continue to fly around like in ME2 and 3). Any way to still play the dlc using my present character? Just as a note...I also don't have any saved games before Ilos.
