I'm a (former) construction worker. Why do people always honk/yell at us as they pass?

This probably seems like a silly question, but I've never really come up with a satisfying answer. Having worked on a roadside construction crew for 2 summers (about 5 months in total), I feel like a week never went by without a car speeding past, horn blaring, arms flailing out the window, unintelligible shouts coming from within. Some days this would happen multiple times. Has anyone ever done this, or have an idea why people do it?

I know some of it is just cars honking at other drivers as they happen to pass by. Other times the reason is pretty obvious (I thought we were the ones who are supposed to wolf-whistle at girls, not the other way around), which is also kind of funny because every crew I've been on has consisted of middle-aged, married Mexican guys and one scrawny white dude (me). Any ideas?
