Why does Karen Klein (bullied bus monitor) deserve over 600,000 dollars?

What will that money go towards? The obvious answer is her retirement but that much money seems excessive. Why should it all go directly towards her and not towards programs that raise awareness about bullying? Will the money heal the damage done to her? Why is this a national story in the first place?
