What was it that Amon tried to achieve, anyway? [Spoiler for the finale]

NSFW

Both Amon and Tarrlok hated their father, that's for sure. Tarrlok tried to take control of Republic City because he wanted to show that he's better than his father, though he was also ironically fulfilling his wishes. Even then he admitted that he was still shaped by the actions of his father in the past.

But Amon, is he really trying to do the same? As I said, he hated his father, probably even more than Tarrlok. Did his father actions convinced him that bending is really the source of evil in the world? Was he just using the non benders as a pawn, or did he really sort of care about them? Was he still trying to avenge his father? Or did he just fell to the dark side, went drunk with power? Was it just a massive plot to make him the only bender in the world? Or maybe he just wanted to watch the world burn?

The explanation that Tarrlok gives is that while it was based around a lie, he really meant all what he said to the non-benders. But he could be wrong. His conversation with Tarrlok at the end seems to imply that Amon also tried to attempt what Tarrlok attempted, to control Republic City. All this reminded me again on what Oscar Wilde once said, that may have some truth in it,

Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth

But no, really, what was it?
