Canadian gunnitors. Question from an American traveling from Texas to Alaska...

I have started the paperwork that allows me to carry a handgun though Canada to Alaska, but I have some specific questions that customs what not very clear on.

I will be carrying a 4.5" handgun with on a 10 rnd mag. Can this gun be loaded and in the glove compartment?

I will also be bringing a rifle. They told me on the phone AR-15's are not allowed. Is this True!!? If this is not true then what are the stipulations on the AR-15?
