Jenson Button is

  • A good driver, he is fast and puts in very consistent lap times.

  • A smooth driver, when tyres are wear dependent he is capable of maintaining them through minimal steering inputs.

  • A great overtaker, he rarely puts a foot wrong and can easily pull off complex overtaking moves.

  • A good qualifier compared to a B grade driver, not the best in the business but still very fast.

  • A reliable driver, he rarely makes mistakes.

He is not:

  • Faster than Lewis Hamilton. For all of his career he has been a few tenths off Hamilton in qualifying. At valencia he was still a few tenths off, its just now that a few tenths off means 9th not 4th.

  • Good at warming tyres. The 2012 Pirelli tyres are more heat sensitive than wear sensitive. Jenson's trick is not putting wear into the tyres, but the problem he had in alot of races, particularly Malaysia was that he couldn't get the heat into his tyres due to being so smooth with his inputs, and he had no pace because of it. This is a situation that more aggressive drivers like Webber and Hamilton can put heat into their tyres.

  • Past it. People say he is past it, he is a great #2 at McLaren and they would be stupid to change him. The current Formula is based around temperamental tyres and the current Formula is also so absurdly tight that a few tenths in qualifying make all the difference. I expect Jenson to move forward in the race today, there is no problems with losing heat in the tyres at such a warm venue.
