My best friend dad just passed away. It was sudden. I hadn't seen the guy in about a year and didn't know he was in stage 3 with his cancer. It came as a huge shock to me personally and upon hearing it, my day went on hold.

I called this friend and his cousin and told them if they needed anything to call me. I got funeral dates and times and all of that and then it hit me.

I had known my friend (K) and his dad (Mr. J) for 15 years. From 5th grade to know. Every time I'd go to K's house, Mr. J would greet me with "Heyya B! (that's me) How ya doin', man? You guys yet? Help yourselves! Come on in!" or "How was your day buddy?" or "How ya doin' in school man? Need any help?"

He was one of the most kind, thoughtful and gracious people I had ever met. His family was one of the few positive aspects of my life coming up through my teens. I feel like I could've turned out a lot worse if not for their love, support and generosity. They really had the ability to make you feel like part of their pack. From chaperoning field trips, to taking us to the skate parks, to hockey games- they did it all with Mr. J at the forefront. He was like a second dad to me.

So now he's passed and I'm just thinking back and I start crying. And I cry intermittently throughout the night (mind you I'm stuck at work during all of this). I call my girlfriend and have her meet me after work. I explain what's wrong, and she seems sort of indifferent about it. She can't seem to grasp it, but she's as supportive as she can be, given the circumstances.

I manage to arrange time off for the last day of the viewing and the funeral. I see Mr. J in his coffin and it gets me again. He's bald. I'd never seen him bald. He's not smiling, laughing or greeting me. He isn't jolly, he's just gone. I lose it. I manage to get through the mass and get a flag for the funeral procession. I drive alone in tears all the way to the graveyard. I usually try to grieve as privately as I can. We go through the burial. I meet up with K, his cousin, E, his brother C, and our friend B and we all reconnect and make plans to go out in a few days. This would be the first time we'd all be together in over a year.

Whew. Break time.

Next day, my girlfriend wants me to meet her friend from work and double date with her and her boyfriend. She says Saturday at first, so I agree because the boys and I are out on Friday. Cool. Gonna be a good weekend. I even got time off for once (I work a lot of days/nights and weekends).

She says the next day (Thursday) that it's gonna go down Friday, this double date. I tell her that I can't do it then. She freaks out and says that I have to. I say I'm sorry but I can't reschedule with them and their schedule is inconsistent as mine. She proceeds to tell me that I already went to the funeral, I don't owe these people anything, and "Why do you even care?"

And I got so mad I couldn't speak. Now it's been this back and forth fight of her saying I don't care about her feelings and me trying to argue that I had to be there for my friends and that we'd all suffered a loss.

How could I have handled this differently? Is there any way at all this could've gone well for me?

I will clarify anything. I wrote this angry and shaking, so it's probably not too coherent. I just got done with yet another fight and need input.
