GTI Oil Problem (xpost from r/Cartalk)

Gonna try to keep this short and sweet for you guys. I basically need to know if there could be a greater, more serious cause of this problem.

I have a 2008 GTI that runs perfectly fine, never really had much of a problem. Start up is weird sometimes (takes a few seconds after turning the key, but nothing too weird.) After a long day of my car being in the sun today parked in a parking lot, my car started up after a few seconds like I mentioned before, and I drove about 2 minutes to the highway and as I was on the acceleration ramp, my HUD displayed "STOP ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LOW ENGINE OFF!" so I pulled over immediately and looked under the hood. The oil is low and I'm about 2k miles over my oil change recommendation (which I set around 3k miles when I could go for about 5k between oil changes). I do drive the car a lot though, as I commute 30 miles to work. I shrugged, and since I did not have much of an option, I continued home, and got home fine. The car didn't have any alarms or signals displayed. I will be getting an oil change tomorrow, but is there something that could be going horribly wrong besides a massive oil leak (which I highly doubt is the case).
