So Reddit, have you ever failed to show the "correct" emotion when people expect it?

I'm 20. Recently it was the 2 year anniversary of my dad's death from a fairly short battle with cancer. He had throat cancer for about 3 months, which was seemingly cured, but it came back very quickly, in his throat, lungs, stomach and spine. For the last month or so he lived in a local hospice. I visited once, at the point where he couldn't talk and could do nothing for himself, not even move. I sat there next to him, and basically just watched the World Cup match that was on at the time due to having no idea what else I should do.

We had never had the closest relationship, at times it felt like he was just a man that lived with us for 18 years of my life. When I was younger I would do things with him, but when I got a bit older and started doing my thing, it was like he lost interest. That said he was always around and never did anything to wrong me.

I was woken up on the day he died by my sister, we just stood on the landing, talking. Neither of us seemed overly moved, (she had similar feelings as me about her relationship with him).

At the funeral, my cousin (his niece) who saw him very rarely, probably less than once a year on average, cried a lot. Neither me or my sister (as far as I am aware) did. Many people spoke to us afterwards to offer their condolences. One woman told me that "it get's easier with time". I remember thinking to myself that it wasn't particularly hard in the first place.

The other day, my aunt rang and asked how I was feeling. I replied, completely forgetting the date, that I was absolutely fine, a statement that was completely true. Only later on did I realise she was probably upset that it was nearly the 2 year anniversary of her brother's death. I even said that my mum seemed fine, which in hindsight probably wasn't overly true.

I am unsure if my sister has ever cried over the death of our dad, I personally have never seen do so. I however, have not once mourned, or even felt sad about his passing. I probably feel worse about not having felt sad, than I do about his death.

However, skip forward nearly 2 years, and I was almost brought to tears by Mass Effect 3.

Tl;dr I was more moved by a video game than the death of my dad.

What occasion in your life has left you bereft of the "correct" emotion?
