Why reddit, why?

Everytime I click on r/funny, there are some funny/cute posts. So I decide to introduce my wife to r/funny, and suddenly: all the top posts are self posts (which are paragraphs long) or pictures of some old freaky guy. Why reddit, why? Why do you let me down when I need you most??
