Reusing an above ground swimming pool for...?

We recently bought a house with an above-ground pool on site. It needs at least $300 worth of work, so we've been putting off getting it "all set up," and I'm starting to rethink the decision to put all that money into it. I love the idea of a place for the kids to swim (we live in South Carolina...hot and humid ALWAYS), but hate the idea of buying chemicals and having a huge above-ground pool on display in our backyard, which I am hoping to begin converting into a sustainable "suburban homestead" within the year.

I'd love to have a natural pool/swimming pond, and have tried to search for ways to reuse the liner, etc....but I'm also open to ANY ideas. I've read about tilapia farming, which is interesting, and reusing the liner as a weatherproof roofing material for green buildings, which is a possibility.

Anyone want to toss out any ideas as to how we could either A. Keep the existing pool up but convert it into something...more? Better? Environmentally friendly? Or B. Tear down the existing pool and use the materials for something better, sustainable, etc?

Thanks!
